Food Allergies in infants

According to a Australian study (Osborne, N. et. al Allergy Clin Immunol 2011) rates of food allergy are higher than expected in Australian infants, with around 10% being found to have allergies to peanuts, egg or sesame. Researchers conducted skin prick testing and oral food challenges in 2850 one-year-old infants. Results found that the prevalence of peanut allergy was 3%, raw egg allergy was 8.9% and sesame allergy prevalence was 0.8%. Researchers also noted that many infants with raw egg allergy could tolerate small amounts of egg in baked goods, and many infants outgrew their egg allergy by the time they reach three or four years of age.
